mXrap 3rd party apps, the next big thing?

"Users can do real-time monitoring and analysis work, reviewing waveforms, picks and more, all inside mXrap."

May 31, 2023, Perth, Australia

At the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), Dr Daniel Cumming-Potvin runs the team responsible for the development of mXrap, a leading geotechnical software platform. A consortium of mining companies, service providers and research organizations is using and supporting the development of mXrap.

Wille Törman, a co-founder at RockSigma, met with Dr Daniel Cumming-Potvin to talk about how 3rd party mXrap applications, and specifically the RockSigma BEMIS mXrap Extension, contribute to the advancement of geotechnical analyses.

“mXrap is governed by the mining companies in the consortium, so what we do, we do for the good of the industry”, says Dr Cumming-Potvin. To inspire additional innovation and value, mXrap supports 3rd party applications. Developers can contribute applications that run inside mXrap.

Being open to outside contributions in terms of applications is great for users as they can keep using the same tool while accessing more new features. “We are moving towards a marketplace model and expect to see the growth of an exciting portfolio of 3rd party apps”, Cumming-Potvin continues.

As RockSigma set out to build an entirely new approach to seismic processing, it was a natural choice to also develop an mXrap application. “For mXrap users to fully reap the benefits of BEMIS seismic processing, it was always an easy decision to build an mXrap application”, says Törnman, and continues “Our BEMIS mXrap Extension allows mXrap users to use their favorite tool, but now with access to full BEMIS features”.

The BEMIS mXrap Extension enables users to do more within one tool than ever before. “With our BEMIS processing and mXrap application, the processing steps are made more transparent. Users can do real-time monitoring and analysis work, reviewing waveforms, picks and more, all inside mXrap”, says Törnman.

Being vendor-neutral is part of the mXrap ethos. The consortium governed platform must serve the needs of all consortium members, regardless of their seismic system or processing vendor. “While we don’t advocate one application over the other, we are really happy to see an innovative actor such as RockSigma contributing to the industry”, says Cumming-Potvin.

RockSigma appreciates the marketplace vision for mXrap and plans to keep contributing innovative and novel applications. “Our BEMIS mXrap Extension is a great start for us, and we look forward to working with mXrap users and the ACG to develop further innovations in years to come”, says Törnman.
